THE BIG SHOUT APPEAL

THE BIG SHOUT APPEAL

Right now, a bush mate is battling with booze, isolated and suffering behind closed doors.

Today, your shout can open the door to life-saving support and social inclusion.

Right now, a bush mate is battling with booze, isolated and suffering behind closed doors.

Right now, a bush mate is battling with booze, isolated and suffering behind closed doors.

Today, your shout can open the door to life-saving support and social inclusion.

Today, your shout can open the door to life-saving support and social inclusion.

The Big Shout national appeal is built on the great Australian tradition of not hesitating to shout a mate a beer.
But we're asking those who’d typically love to shout a beer to instead shout a virtual round – the $$$ equivalent of a beer or a carton – so that your mateship and generosity can fund real help instead ... because some of our mates need a hand, not another beer in their hand.
Throughout the entire month of February, whether you're a drinker, a non-drinker or somewhere in between, shouting your support can literally change and save the lives of remote Australians fighting hidden battles with addiction and choosing to cut back grog.
Ready to donate? We’d love you to join the ranks of legends who've been chipping in to support country mates. Simply choose your virtual shout from the donation form or add a custom amount.
If you’re not quite ready yet ... scroll on down the page to find out more about why our country mates truly need your help.

Learning and understanding more about my father’s addiction; the pain he carried and the struggles he faced, after losing him to it has brought a deeper awareness I never had before. It’s been incredibly healing to begin to understand what life may have felt like for him in the lead-up to his sudden passing. Of course, I wish I knew then what I know now. The education and insight I’ve gained through Sober in the Country has changed the way I see it all. But there’s comfort in knowing that other families might receive that awareness sooner - that it might help someone better understand, support, or even save a loved one. Sober in the Country hasn’t just provided education, it has helped me heal from my father’s addiction and passing. Thank you

Alcohol doesn’t discriminate and can quietly start to control you. Sober in The Country has helped me drastically change my life and my habits. As a mum of two beautiful girls who has had some really hard, horrible and scary things happen as a result of alcohol over the course of my life I knew I needed a change but I couldn’t do it alone. I hope if you are struggling whoever and wherever you are in the bush, Sober in the Country really does have your back and together we can try and shift the perception of alcohol as a fix all. To my husband, thank you for standing by me and while my story is not so bad compared to most maybe it will help another bush mum realise it’s ok to need help.

As a proud Bush Tribe peer, I know first hand the resources, time, energy and love that is poured into supporting rural and remote Australian's to know it is okay to say 'no thanks' or 'not today' to booze. Thanks SITC for your authenticity, collaboration and hope. Shanna, I wish you all the very best with this national appeal with whom the work is saving lives. I've been following Sober In The Country for a few years now. Growing up in the country and with peer pressure to drink, being told there's something wrong with you if you don't drink, it was tough! Growing up in a small country town (and family) that had alcohol at the centre of every single event, I never knew I had a choice to say no. My two boys are at stations up North, have been since they were 17 they are now 24 and 22. Whilst there are so many great things about outback communities, the drinking culture really fuels them and they use it to self medicate their ADHD and to fit in. I hope you really can get the message to these young men- they would not even consider the option of not drinking. They’d be laughed out of the stock camp! Even the moderation message would be great. Thank you for trying to make a difference now for the sake of their future!

This donation is a fraction of what I used to spend on grog in a year. The work SITC does is saving lives, as it gently changes the narrative in the bush. Followed you for a long time Shanna ♥️ You’re bloody amazing. My family have always been surrounded by alcohol. I could have slid down that slippery slope. Sadly my little sister did first which made me pull up, hard. Supporting her is hard. Very hard. But your posts and resources help 🩷 Thank you for being normal and real and a very synthetic world 🫶🏻🌟

If you are self-medicating with alcohol it’s not the right way to go and just makes things worse. Ditch the grog, sort the problems, one small step at a time. You can do it. Alternatively… If you can’t drink without turning into a dkhd, then don’t fkn drink.

I grew up in suburbia but now live in a rural town. SITC resonates across the whole country. Alcohol harm affected my family deeply, and I totally get that not all people turn nasty under the influence of alcohol but excessive drinking does leave lifelong scars. To me, the work SITC does is invaluable. If other families can be helped and the cycle of alcohol harm stopped, that would be amazing.

Why your support is needed now

Right now, tens of thousands of rural and remote Australians are struggling with alcohol harm and addiction in isolation with little to no access to the support they need ... leading to depression, social isolation, farm accidents, suicide, preventable early deaths and other devastating outcomes.

We're aiming to raise much-needed funds in the month of February to extend our charity's impact, linking our mates who want to cut back or cut out booze to the support they need, sharing stories of hope, and helping make sure everyone is included, no matter the kind of drink in their hand.
We can't do this life-saving work without you. Every donation, big or small will have a huge impact.

Why this campaign matters:

Why this campaign matters:

Hidden struggles

Many of our rural friends are fighting often invisible battles with alcohol harm or addiction behind closed doors. They're suffering every day ... and chances are, you wouldn't even know it until it's too late.

Pressure to drink

Out here in the country, our national identity and "bush pride" are often directly linked to grog. Our national survey found 96% of remote Australians who chose to say "no thanks" or "not today" to a drink faced severe pressure, bullying and the familiar line that "just one won't hurt you!". And while the intention of this is often camaraderie, its impact can be devestating.

Devastating impacts

Alcohol harm and addiction are directly linked to all the "big ticket" issues that most severely impact bush communities, including farm accidents, depression, bullying, domestic violence, suicide,  preventable early deaths  and more. And it's not just the person fighting addiction who is impacted: it's their loved ones too.

Scarce support

People living in rural or remote Australia are 150% more likely to experience harm from alcohol, yet only 17% get the help they need. Access to appropriate support is scarce for remote Australians often literally impossible to access due to geographic isolation, too city-centric, and/or impossible to afford.

And these are just a few of the reasons why your shout is urgently needed.

Why this campaign matters:

Why this campaign matters:

With your support, we can:

Extend the reach of The Bush Tribe

The Bush Tribe is a safe, caring and carefully moderated online peer‑support network that's saved and changed the lives of thousands of rural Australians seeking to cut back or quit booze. In order to provide this non-judgemental, welcoming and supportive space – a place where rural people simply get around each other and share their own experiences, and resources that have helped them as well as cheer each other on – we need to provide trained moderators. With your shout, we can train more peer moderators and volunteers, allowing us to expand this online community so nobody is left alone or behind when they choose less or no booze.

Put practical tools in more hands

In the bush, booze is hardwired into our DNA: from socialising to celebrating, commiserations, business events, knock-off beers to simply drinking to "fit in. At Sober in the Country, we write and curate practical resources – like our Sober Toolbox – and connect vulnerable people to vital, vetted, trusted mental health providers and support organisations. Your donation helps us to continue creating and sharing these tools and supports, enabling mates and their loved ones to find their way towards recovery and vital, life-saving mental health support.

Share more stories of hope

Our video storytelling changes lives by sharing authentic stories of a powerful cross-section of real bush people choosing a life with less or no booze. When it comes to overcoming addiction and cutting back, half the battle is won when people "see" themselves in others’ stories. So it's no exaggeration to say that our stories act as a lifeline. With your support, we can film and share more stories, and throw more lifelines to those who need to know they’re not alone and that change is absolutely possible.

Build life‑saving partnerships

In remote regions, alcohol harm is far above the national average, yet support is well below the national average. We partner with like-minded organisations to advocate for and spread the word about the critical need for equitable support for remote Australians, from home‑based Telehealth detoxes to counselling and structured recovery programs. Your shout fuels these partnerships, bringing more urgent, life‑saving help to the bush.

Train more ambassadors

Our founder Shanna Whan (AM) has spoken nationally for more than a decade to change the narrative around booze in the bush – pioneering change by showing how easily we can have conversations about booze and alcohol harm in the bush. Now, we’re equipping more ambassadors to deliver workshops and talks in communities and workplaces across remote Australia. With your support, we can train more ambassadors to amplify our message and what we know is working to help our remote Australians.

Launch a men’s group

Men in the bush are our gravest concern: they're much harder to reach, less likely to seek help, and they've been taught the only way to "open up" or be vulnerable is through the lens of a brown bottle. We’re setting up a dedicated online rural men’s group to support those struggling with booze, so they can break their silence in a safe space among other men who are rural ... and who get it. Your shout helps us build this vital connection for the vulnerable blokes who need it most.

Expand the reach of #OK2SAYNO

Our grassroots #OK2SAYNO (to booze) movement has already changed countless lives across the outback, from ensuring bush communities stock thoughtful alcohol-free drink options (more than just booze and sugary drinks) to equipping leaders and trainees on why it needs to be okay (always) for any of our mates to say "no" or "not today" to booze. With your support, we can expand our #OK2SAYNO movement, workshops and training nationally with an advertising campaign designed to reach more communities, workplaces, and families in remote areas of Australia where alcohol harm is high and support is scarce. Your shout will help us amplify this life-saving message nationwide.

And we can’t offer all this urgently needed, life-saving support without you.

A little note from our founder, Shan

Since day one, on February 22, 2015, when I chose life over death and walked away from my own alcohol addiction, terrified and alone ... I have never wavered in my own personal stance. And this stance is now our charity's stance: we are not interested in ‘preaching’ prohibition. This doesn’t work and it never will. This appeal echoes these same core values, which are never about judging a mate who can enjoy a few drinks safely, but rather about respecting the choices of those who choose less or no alcohol, without qualification or reason.

You may have heard of our #OK2SAYNO (to booze) movement – and that’s what our charity's stance is all about. You "do you", but please always also back your mates who want to cut back or cut out booze to do the same. And please simply make the effort to ensure everyone’s included and properly catered for at every single bush event.

Just like our #OK2SAYNO movement, with The Big Shout appeal, we're asking that you support rural or remote Australians who are opting to cut back on or ditch the booze altogether. We’re asking that you show that support in the same way we do without hesitation when someone is battling any other illness, like depression, cancer, or a broken leg.

I'm so glad you found your way to this page. And I, the Sober in the Country team, and all the remote Australians we help would deeply appreciate your support. With your virtual shout, you can help us to continue saving and changing rural lives.
